Black History Month: INPEX® Celebrates African-American Inventors

African-American inventors Tim & Lisa Washington exhibited their "Nite Hoops" invention at INPEX 2005Americans have been recognizing Black History Month as far back as 1926. This February, INPEX – America's Largest Invention Trade Show, would like to highlight some of its African-American inventors and entrepreneurs who have displayed an innovative spirit.

These inventors share that same entrepreneurial ideal as those who have come before them. Sarah Boone patented an ironing board in 1892. In more recent times, Lonnie Johnson developed the Super Soaker, the first water blaster to incorporate air pressure into its design, and James West patented the electret microphone.

The following is a brief list of some of our African-American INPEX exhibitors and their inventions:

  • The Clocketbook invented by Patricia Joyner, Hillside, N.J. – In 2005, African-American inventor Joyner displayed the Clocketbook, a pocketbook with a working clock. The Clocketbook could be used as a purse, a tool for the visually impaired and to teach children how to tell time.
  • Elizabeth's Classic Designs invented by Elizabeth Berryman Kent, Richmond, Virginia – A past INPEX exhibit, Elizabeth's Classic Designs are like conventional ottomans with cushioned tops for resting feet. However, with this design the cushion lifts up so the hollow base can be used for storage.
  • Nite Hoops created by African-American inventors Tim and Lisa Washington, Huntersville, N.C. – Tim and Lisa were 2005 INPEX exhibitors, and were also invited to exhibit Nite Hoops at the Electronic Retailing Association Exposition in Las Vegas. Nite Hoops is a portable, adjustable basketball goal assembly with a fluorescent backboard and rim for improved visibility at night.
  • S&J Shoe Glove™ invented by Steven and Jacqueline Woodbury, Tulsa, Okla. – A 2005 INPEX invention, the S&J Shoe Glove is a stylish shoe cover that would fit over a woman's high heel to protect it from inclement weather. The glove would be available in many different styles and colors to match any type of shoe.
