The presents are all unwrapped, the tree is down, and the holiday trinkets are going back into their boxes until next year. Work is back to business as usual, and if your company is like most, there are no more free days off until May.
It's a pretty depressing time after the holidays!
But, the best thing about this time of year is that it's the perfect time to make a resolution to focus on your invention. We at INPEX® – The Invention Show, in the spirit of New Year's resolutions, bring you three things you can do to move your invention forward in the New Year.
1. Build Your Invention Prototype. The best thing about an invention prototype is that it doesn't have to be perfect. Many inventors simply don't have access to the electronics, raw materials or technology required to build their inventions.
Even a rudimentary, non-working model can still be a helpful way to show how your idea will function when it's complete. If your invention is very large, the model doesn't have to be to scale. The point is to give companies, manufacturers and others who may be interested in your idea something that they can see and feel.
If building an invention prototype is simply not possible, a computer-generated three-dimensional model is a great alternative. Or, a two-dimensional conceptual drawing is a starting point that you can build from.
2. Perfect Your Presentation. Understanding what is exciting about your invention and developing it into a dialog that will pique the interest of a manufacturer, consumer, or investor is important.
A good presentation will showcase the problem your invention solves. Use common terms to state concretely what you have, or what you do, that solves the problem you've identified.
An issue to avoid in your presentation is overstating the obvious. To say simply "It Saves Time and Money" is not enough. This is too general. Many inventions do this. Be specific about what the invention accomplishes such as, "absorbs grease in the frying pan."
Finally, if you have a prototype, demonstrate how to use it during your pitch. Watching an interactive presentation is more exciting than listening to a speech.
3. Attend an Invention Trade show. The best way to learn how to be a good inventor is to network with other inventors!
Exhibiting at a trade show is a great way to introduce your invention to the public, press and industry. INPEX, which is America's Largest Invention Trade Show, will be held this June 11-14th at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
Unlike many ambitious New Year's Resolutions, taking steps to better your invention is a doable task so long as you're willing to put in a little hard work. This year was a great year for all of us at INPEX, and we can't wait to see what great new inventions are in store for us in 2008. Have a Safe and Happy New Year!
