INPEX's "Blue Hydrogen and ammonia Production and Usage Demonstration Project" is the first domestic project that will cover the entire spectrum from manufacturing to usage of hydrogen and ammonia, which are clean energy sources that do not emit CO2 during usage. Construction of the surface plant began in 2023, and the production and supply of blue hydrogen and ammonia is scheduled to begin in 2025.
Natural gas used as a raw material will be sourced from the INPEX-operated Minami-Nagaoka Gas Field in Niigata Prefecture. In addition, the CO2 generated as a by-product during the production of hydrogen and ammonia will be injected into a natural gas storage reservoir in the Hirai District of the Higashi Kashiwazaki Gas Field, where gas production has already ended (CCUS*), reducing atmospheric emissions. The produced hydrogen can therefore be marketed and utilized as blue hydrogen. Blue hydrogen produced in this demonstration test will also be channeled to a hydrogen power generation facility that will supply electricity to consumers in Niigata Prefecture. In addition, we aim to produce blue ammonia from the blue hydrogen to supply to consumers in Niigata Prefecture.
